THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HUMECTANTS AND ANTI-HUMECTANTS

May 23, 2014

Humectants and Anti-Humectants

Humectants -attract and bind moisture
Anti-humectants - seal/lock in moisture

Humectants:
Natural: glycerin, honey, algae extracts, kelp, lecithin, aloe vera
Commercial: panthenol, sodium pca, sorbitol, hydrolized proteins, glycols (i.e propylene), silicones

Anti-humectants/anhydrous (do not contain water):
Oils and butters (i.e. olive oil, shea butter, mango butter, beeswax, coconut oil, castor oil, etc)

Products that can work as both humectants and anti-humectants: Aloe Vera
It helps moisturize the hair and scalp. When the aloe vera is cold, it helps close the cuticles. Aloe vera also balances the hair's pH.
